What is Caregiver Program About?
As Canada offers immigrants several immigration options to migrate into the country, candidates can also explore the caregiver program. The program provides immigrants with recruiting opportunities in Canada to offer child care or house-aid support to seniors/persons with disabilities.
Canadian Caregiver Program falls under the country’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). Like most TFWPs, qualifying for the caregiver program creates a pathway to permanent residency in Canada. After working as a caregiver for a stipulated time frame, you become eligible for permanent residency.
Caregiver Program Streams
In Canada, persons currently residing in the country can invite international workers to offer caregiver services through a few caregiver immigration streams. These streams collectively serve the purpose of making foreign workers offer immediate care to their sponsors.
Each stream is coordinated by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). To get approval into any of these streams, both the immigrants and employers must meet the criteria. Let’s get into the various caregiver program streams available for foreign workers:
Live-In Caregiver Program (LCP)
Before now, caregivers had to stay in the homes of their sponsors to qualify for the eligibility requirement for the caregiver program. Today, however, this requirement is no longer expected from applicants looking to get into the program. While the ESDC and IRCC currently restrict applications into the Live-in Caregiver program – caregivers presently working in Canada can forward their permanent residence applications if they:
- Have worked for a minimum of two years in the Live-in Caregiver Program
- Currently work in the country with their LCP-approved work permit, or
- Were previously approved for their work permit as a result of the submission of the Labour Market Impact Assessment by their employer to ESDC on/or before November 30, 2014
Who can apply to be a Live-In caregiver?
Foreign immigrants interested in working with a Canadian employer as a caretaker or nanny for their kids, seniors, or persons with disabilities can apply for the Live-in Caregiver program.
In the long run, caregivers become eligible for permanent residency in Canada. With a two-year work experience as a live-in caregiver, immigrants can apply for permanent residence.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for the Live-in Caregiver Program, interested applicants must:
- Be a valid permit holder, have applied to extend their work permits, or currently processing to restore their worker status in Canada
- Have at some point worked and/or still works in a job that meets their NOC code’s duties
- Have worked as either a Home Child Care provider or Home Support Worker in Canada over the years
- Have an equivalent of at least CLB 5 or NLCL 5 to verify applicants’ fluency in all four languages
- Have worked for a minimum of one year since November 30, 2014, without working alongside schooling as a student
- Be a graduate of any Canadian High School with a diploma, foreign diploma, and/or other educational credentials equivalent to these
Rules to follow when working in the LCP
When approved as a live-in caregiver, there are the rules to follow while working in Canada:
- Must be willing to work for a minimum of 30 hours carrying out full-time care to kids below 18 years, individuals with disabilities, elderly persons in said home
- Be willing to live and work in said home without primary supervision or assistance of any kind
- Must meet the criteria of CIC and Human Resources & Skills Development Canada which includes fluency in English and French, as well as undergoing mandatory full-time training for a minimum of 6 months
How to apply for the Live-in caregiver program
Sadly, new applicants do not have access to the Live-in Caregiver program. Candidates without an LCP work permit but show interest in working as a caregiver would have to process their work permit application.
Canadian employees can only employ a caregiver into the LCP program if they:
- Currently have a work permit as a Live-in caregiver and also interested in working for a new employer
- Approved by Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) with proof of the caregiver agreeing to live in the sponsor’s home
Applying for permanent resident as a Live-in caregiver
Live-in caregivers are eligible for permanent residency in Canada when they meet the following criteria:
- Must have a 2-year authorized live-in work experience in Canada
- Caregivers must have at 3900 hours of work record to be considered as authorized full-time live-in employees in Canada with not more than 390 hours of overtime registered
- The work experiences for candidates should be acquired within four years
Home Child Caregiver Program
The Home Child Caregiver Program allows foreign workers to offer help to busy parents by caring for and watching after their children.
Sometimes, the job description may also include helping out with household duties.
Under the Home Child Caregiver Program, caregivers could offer care to their sponsor’s children either in their homes or the employer’s homes.
